Ted Cantle’s Book: Community Cohesion: A New Framework for Race and Diversity. Palgrave 2005 and 2008. This academic study firmly established the theoretical approach behind the policy and practice of cohesion

The shift to Interculturalism

By 2010, Ted Cantle recognised that the policy and practice of multiculturalism was hindering the development of cohesion. It put people into rigid boxes, often patrolled by religious and community leaders. He developed the idea of ‘Interculturalism’ as an alternative approach which would promote more fluid identities in which enable people interact and reject simplistic one-dimensional notions of who they are.

A new book, many articles and publications followed.

Ted’s most recent report on cohesion looked back over the last 20 years and considered some of the most recent trends that will require attention if further tensions and divisions are to be avoided.
